Police have charged a Zebulon man with collecting $10,000 from two
nightclub owners after he promised them that Daddy Yankee, a Grammy
award-winning performing artist, would appear at their venue in Benson.
Daddy
Yankee didn’t show up. Raleigh police charged Elio Hernandez, 23, of
Riley Hill Road with two felony counts of obtaining property by false
pretenses, according to arrest warrants.
Police accused Hernandez
of obtaining $5,000 apiece from Ronnie Gene Woodall of Benson and Jorge
Rodolfo Vasquez Sagastume of Franklinton. Investigators say the men
thought they were making a down payment to secure the appearance of
Daddy Yankee, a Puerto Rican reggaeton and hip hop songwriter and
recording artist.
Investigators think Hernandez used an altered
contract to convince the men that he would perform at Ambis 1 in Benson.
They say Daddy Yankee, whose real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez,
wasn’t even in the United States on the scheduled dates, according to
the arrest warrants.
In November, Hernandez was sentenced to 18
months probation by a Wake County judge after he was convicted of felony
obtaining property by false pretenses, identity theft and
counterfeiting, state records show.
He was in custody Tuesday at the Wake County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, court records show.
