Controversia "Mas Que Mil Palabras" Mixtape Review

The first time I heard Controversia was when I was hosting the Moliendo Mix Show. He called in and dropped a freestyle over the phone. The show was impressed with his lyrics and punchlines that we invited him to perform at La Conekta so that he could showcase his talent and rock a live Hip Hop crowd for the first time on stage. Two Mixtapes later he releases his best work to date and a mixtape that all Hip Hop Latino should give a listen to. Compared to his previous mixtapes these songs came out sounding stronger thanks to the engineering talent of Marvin "M.A.". One thing that I enjoyed about this mixtape is that the tracks are not ones that you hear being used by other mixtape artists. Most mcs that release mixtapes have the idea or strategy that if they release a mixtape it has to be with the most commercial or popular instrumentals from the radio or that crank in the club. And that they have to rap bout the same content that the club or radio puts out. This mixtape does not take that route and takes the route of being original with no skits and just lyrics and soulful beats.

On many of his tracks he names numerous mcs and djs that have performed at La Coneckta including on "Lo Vivi Lo Escribi" he mentions myself and a verse from my song Chicha.
The "Cypher" which features Advocate and Camilo 100Fuegos has a video on youtube. Compared to many cypher songs this one is upbeat and versatile with Advocate giving a sick line "This is how you murder a Mic, Not on Conrad shit, Im gonna murder it with rhymes"

"Vuelta La Rueda" a beat that features DJ scratching and a catchy hook which is an element that many of todays Hip Hop tracks are lacking. Estoy en la casa como Ikea- Ceromundo. "Tengo Que Jociar" is a song that tells Contros' story of how he has no option but to grind on a great laid back beat. "Violin Negro" is a hard violin sampled beat that features Kleema another artist from the DMV that has been working hard and close with Contro. Kleema suprises his audience with some hard lyrics directed towards a scandalous female. On "Tienen Problema" he surprises us with Enemigo a known Latin Mc from the New York Underground scene and a screwed hook. "Buena Suerte" is probably my favorite track from the whole mix-tape it has a crazy opera choir influenced type of beat wear he tells a metaphoical story and a chorus where he reminds us to have good luck. Its the type of song I wouldnt be suprised to hear in a club soon. On "Miro Pal Cielo" is another great song that where he demonstrates his lyrical skills by telling the story of his family and his struggles.

Overall I think its a great listen for any Latino in the DMV to have due to the fact that the CD is in Spanish. Its something that I hope would open their ears and appreciate the talent that is in their backyard. My only complaint is that it lacks animation and I would like to hear more versatility as far as the beats and maybe a few skits, intros, or movie intros to make it more fun. If we analyze the esscence of mixtapes they started with something that made them unique from the rest. I would also like to have seen a DJ "mix the tape" to give it some animation instead of it just being track after track. Other than that its dope to bump to and have in your playlist.
