I have a been a crazy comic book fan since I can remember. When I was 5yo I got lost at PG Plaza in Hyattsville, MD and when Mall Securtity found me they asked me my name. I was scared and angrey that I was lost so I said "David Banner". The alias of the popular TV show at the time "The Incredible Hulk" played by Lou Ferigno. As I grew older I liked Superman (even had the Superman bedcovers), Spiderman underoos, and went to see Tim Burtons "Batman" front row seat on opening day at City Place Mall in Silver Spring, MD.
In my teenage years I started collecting comic books and became a fan of Ghostrider, Punisher, & The Xmen. I use to draw the characters and was fascinatied by that whole comic book universe. As I told my family members about my favorite comic book heros, they could only relate with Condorito the Chilean bird that had sexist and maschista jokes. El Chavo del Ocho
Comic books were my escape and encouraged me to read and appreciate artwork. Today Im living my childhood dreams were just about all my favorite past time comic book heros have a movie plus a sequels or a revamped version (just like the comic books). One of the biggest marvel movies to date and is breaking records is "Black Panther" based on the 1st Black comic book hero and even later on inspired civil rights group of the same name. I had an avengers issue where Black Panther appeared and I had his collector card. I always thought he had a cool uniform, his outfit reminded me of Snake eyes from Gi-Joe.
This had has inspired to see who was the first Latino/Hispanic Super Hero. The first that came to mind was Wonder Woman, side note my childhood TV crush was on Linda Carter from the 80s TV series. I always had the impression that Wonder Woman was from the Amazons in South America. Turns out after research the Amazonians in the DC Comic universe were from Greek Mythology. :(
I remembered there was Spiderman 2099 who was of Mexican descent, but thats in the future. And Miles Morales is currently the New Spider Man (half african american, half hispanic) Im sad to say but this is a little late for me especially understanding the marketing strategy behind this.
I recently learned there was not one but 2 Latino Ghostriders? A female and a male, sorry Marvel yall too late. I grew up on Dan Ketch and Johnny Blaze (Method man)
So I started to dig in the creates and heres some interesting finds
El Toro might be the 1st Latin Super Villain
"Tales of Astonish #54" 1963
White Tiger is the first Puerto Rican Super hero from Marvel
Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19
Junta appears on Black Panther Vol3 #9
Machete Capitain America #302
El Gato Negro
High Note ..Thor #203
Snowflame...New Guardians #2 Blow in the wind or Jungle Snow
Zorro
