Chicha - Drink of the Incas
Latin America's Fermented Corn Drink and the Fiesta de la Jora

Visitors to Latin America will, at some point in their travels, come across a traditional drink called chicha, a type of fermented beverage common in the region.

Chicha, a pale yellow, milky drink common throughout Latin America, originated with the Incas, who used the drink during festivals and other rituals. Nowadays, chicha remains an important part of the region’s indigenous past, and can be found in a variety of settings, from the dinner table to a wedding or baptism!
A Culinary Tradition

Traditionally, Inca women made this important drink by chewing corn to a pulp and then spitting the mixture into a vat of warm water. These women (actually girls of ages 8-10), called Acllas or Acllacunas, were sent to all-female schools called Acllahuasis to learn the art of brewing chicha, among other things.

Once the corn was masticated and spit into the warm water, it would sit for a few days before it was ready to drink. The end result was a mildly alcoholic beverage.

Serving Chicha

Chicha is often served communally, to foster a sense of community and solidarity, and encourage a sense of equality. It is generally served in a small, hollowed-out gourd, called a pilche, and passed from person to person. In traditional communities, it would be considered offensive to refuse to share a drink of chicha, and so visitors are told that they must sip it in order to avoid stepping on anyone’s cultural toes.

Chicha Today

Indigenous communities around Latin American, including the countries of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, still make chicha. In some cases, the recipe has changed and been adapted a bit over the years, however. In Ecuador, for instance, it is conventionally made with jora, a type of dry yellow maize, but is not usually masticated first. As in the days of the Incas, chicha de jora is left to ferment in a large clay urn called a pondo for a few days before consuming, which gives it a slight alcoholic content.

Modern day chicha is not necessarily alcoholic, however. There are many variations of the original recipe using fruit juices and other ingredients such as oatmeal, rice or yucca (manioc root or cassava).

Although it has its roots in the Inca Empire, chicha has come to mean any sort of fruit drink or juice in the common population. It is rare to find communities that still prepare chicha in the traditional way, or that continue to use it solely for festivities and/or rituals. It is not uncommon to find chicha on the dinner table in place of juice or a soft drink. In fact, in some countries, such as Peru, you can find chicha-flavored sweetened drink similar to Kool-Aid.

Fiesta de la Jora

Perhaps one of the most well-known festivals where chicha de jora is the guest of honor is during the Fiesta de la Jora, which takes place during the first half of September in some villages of the province of Imbabura in northern Ecuador. Festivities include dancing, feasting, and, of course, drinking chicha!

Chicha as Culture and Identity

Chicha represents the old in face of the new, the traditional triumphing over the modern. Some Latin Americans feel that drinking chicha is a way to remain true to one’s identity and cultural heritage. There is something bucolic and comforting when one drinks chicha, much like drinking a bit of history itself.

Yo como artista de Hip Hop me encanta escuchar toda clase de musica. Todo de rock, funk, oldies, reggae, dancehall, salsa, merengue, cumbia, alternative, ect. Los pioneros del Hip Hop escuchaban toda clase de musica. Uno de los elementos en crear la musica fue sampliar. Y para sampliar tenes que escuchar diferente clase de musica. Hasta en la lirica hay raperos que utilizan versos o choros de otros generos de musica. Pero a la misma vez hay gente que solo escuchan el rap y nada mas.

En el universo tambien hay gente que adora la musica duranges, las rancheras y hay otros que los odian. En el "east coast" hay mucho fanaticos de la musica bachata que no pueden sorportar la musica mejicana. Igual como hay fans del rock en espanol que no le gustan el reggeton. Todos son diferente clases de musica que vienen de diferente regiones y diferente paises. La musica es como el licor. Los dos estan en las fiestas, te acompanan en los tiempos de amor y dolor. Y los dos te ponen a bailar.

Urbano: "relativo de la ciudad"
Ciudad: "Conjunto de edificios y calles, regidos por un ayuntamiento, cuya población densa y numerosa se dedica por lo común a actividades no agrícolas.

"Musica Urbano" se puede entender que es musica de la ciudad. El Hip Hop/rap es de la ciudad, el punk rock tambien es de la ciudad. So me pregunto que musica no es de la ciudad? El "country music" obiavemente no es la ciudad. Empezo con los campesinos igual como la bachata, musica norteña, banda. El funk que es un sancocho de musica y empezo con James Brown. James Brown es del sur de la EEUU o sea el campo.

So aqui viene el discussion el nombre "musica urbano" es un nombre que se esta utilizano mucho. Le dicen "bachata urbano" "merengue urbano" ect. Los grupos talvez son de la ciudad pero la musica siempre es del campo.
Aqui viene el argumento..si el grupo es de la ciudad y estan haciendo musica que viene del campo y el grupo no esta haciendo cambios a la musica o incluyeno ingredientes de la ciudad (ej: scratch, sample, ect.) Es considerado como musica urbano?

Yo creo que "musica urbano" es un termino que inventaron las disqueras y la radiolas para vender mas discos a los jovenes. Las disqueras y las radiolas saben que los jovenes estan de moda con la cultura Hip Hop. So que pasa se vistan de moda y pretenden hablar cool. Que para mi yo lo encuentro bien porq sinceramente me cae mal ver grupos o bandas done tode el grupo se viste igual. Si analizas mira que el look ayudado grupos como Kumbia Kingz, Aventura. Se visitan diferente y sabemos el nombre del mero cantante. Al cambio un ejemplo Grupo Niche (salsa) se visten igual y pocos sabe el nombre del mero cantante.

En mi cancion nueva "CHICHA"..mi primer verso dice no hago musica urbano, rapeo hago musica bacano no necesariamente estoy diciendo que no hago musica de la ciudad. Yo rapeo y hago la musica chevre no importa que clase de musica es..la gente que me apoyan saben que hago musica de la ciudad y no estoy arregando un termino a la musica para vender discos..rapeo mi estilo y hago la musica bacano.

Recording fees, promo costs, equipment costs, merch, touring and transportation expenses, countless Chalupas from Taco Bell – it all adds up. Consider yourself lucky if your income-to-expense ratio is equal.

To help combat the never-ending pile-o-bills, it makes sense to seek out additional sources of income to help offset your expenses. So, other than selling your prized baseball card collection from 1986, looking for endorsement deals and sponsorship is another option.

Acquiring endorsement deals requires some serious commitment and effort, but hopefully we can offer a few tips to help guide you through the process.

First of all, you need to define who you are and what you have to offer. Ask yourself these questions:

1. How would you define your band’s sound and style?
2. Why do you want to endorse said company’s stuff (equipment, beverage, merchandise)?
3. What value do you bring to the table? (How many shows per year do you play? How many friends do you have on Facebook? Do you have a solid website? Do you have a substantial email list? Next, do your research. Compile a list of companies that you believe in and identify a contact. Also, tap into your existing resources (like fellow band members) to create a list of everyone they know and potential businesses to start with.

Next step is to create your pitch. This will includes your answers to the above questions (who you are, what you have to offer, what you want from the company and how you can benefit the company) and your artist one sheet. Remember, these companies don’t necessarily care about what they can do for you, but what you can do for them or what you can do together. Here are a few things to consider when pitching companies for endorsement:

Stand out – it’s likely that that the company you are going after receives multiple inquiries a day on the same subject so find a unique (but succinct) approach. Whether it’s a catchy email subject line or a hand-delivered, gift-wrapped pitch package, be memorable.

Present an idea – offering up a suggestion on how you and the company can mutually benefit right away from a partnership makes the process easier on you and them. Tell the breakfast chain restaurant on your tour route that you’ll invite all of the people in your audience to their restaurant after each show in exchange for free food for your band on the road. Tell the energy drink company that you’ll put their banner on the top of your website in exchange for a case a month. Record a holiday song using nothing but Company X’s equipment and offer them the exclusive MP3 single to give to their customers in exchange for discounted gear.

Think outside the box – Everyone is going after Red Bull and Gibson and Fender. Don’t be afraid to approach their lesser-known competition.

Once you’ve got your pitch perfected and your contacts collated, the next step is to get out there and start asking! Sure, there’s a chance you’ll hear a few no’s the first time around, but there’s also a chance you’ll hear yes.

If you are going after a beer company and your brother-in-law is good pals with the guy that delivers kegs to his establishment every week, get his name and start with him. If your wife works with a lady who’s family runs the local franchise of a regional chain restaurant, start with her. It’s all about utilizing your network. Someone you know, knows someone who knows someone in charge and it’s all about getting your foot in the door. If that initial contact isn’t in charge of making endorsement-related decisions for the company, ask them who is and have them introduce you to that person.

Its been a minute since Ive updated my blog, hopefully I will be on it more often because there are so many things I want to share. I recently went in the studio with Controversia. Hes upcoming fresh young talent from the DMV. The kid got lyrical skills, once his swords is sharpen hes gonna be sick. We recorded a track called "La Rueda"...its a sick concept. and their is a vision for the video.

I also recorded another track "babylon" which came out sick...its gonna be released on my upcoming mixtape "Desprogramado". I also got employed to work part-time closely with a music distribution company. The project after the mixtape is going to be an EP and will more than likely be released with them.

I have so many names from Cero, Ceroparcero, carnicero, ect...I decided my artist name is going to be Cero Mundo....folks can still call me Cero. The graphic design company is called Es Chevere Designs

La Conekta Presents Hip Hop Por La Paz

I had a great time hosting this event and introducing each artist. I also met some great people and people I havent seen in a minute s/o to IzdaTruth, The Sargonits, Junis1, Reyes De Bajomundo, El Comandante who flew from Los Angeles for this event. This was a first time for some artists on stage of La Conekta to see what we are doing and they had a good time.

The only thing I dont like about La Conekta events is that sometimes you have artists that come perform and leave. Which i understand you might have to work your "real job" the next day, or meet up with someone, or have a ride pending. But then you also have the artist that dont care to listen to the message thats some of these artists are bringing to the table. You also have artists that wont come to the event because they are not on the bill. I consider them fake. They dont understand that these type of events you have to come out and network, you never know who is going to be there. These are the same fake artists that will come and ask me hook me up with La Conekta event in NY or BOS. Get da fuk out of here!!!!! But i gotta give my salut to all the artists that performed and the real people that did stick around...They are LA CONEKTA

I had no idea that GUERILLA REPBULIK clothing was going to be in the building. If you dont know bout this, then you need to stick to your "real job" and dont ever come out to these events. all i gotta say is GOOGLE "Immortal Technique" "Diabolic"..."only the realest feel this"

This Conekta event was my first time seeing THE SARGONITES come out and perform from the BX. I was truly inspired by their show. It was real Hip Hop, they came with a dope message. They rocked it out. plus RDBM always rock the crowd. Im a big fan of songs like "Spark The Musica" "Cuanto Cuesta" and "Attencion".

During the whole night i had 3-4 aguilas. But i was high off the energy from the crowd and the music. That night I left and headed home and accidently ran a flashing red light. When next thing you know..whoop - whoop. I get pulled over by MO.CO PD. I get asked to do a sobriety test I told the officer that my last drink was bout an hour ago. I failed the sobriety test just for the fact that even if I was sober i would have failed it. He asks if i want to do the breath test I declined because i do not know my rights on that. So he arrests me and takes me in to the station and my car is towed. While at the station I try to delay time in taking the breath test by saying i gotta go to the bathroom and by rereading the paperwork. I then take the breath test, my resultados come back......drum rolll.............0.0.....no wonder They call me Cero....lol
All I get is a citation for the light and i have to pay to get my car out....lucky me I'm on papers...

DJ BATTLE

What a crazy weekend....This was def one of my craziest weekends this year so far.

I went to the DJ BATTLE in VA at Velocity 5 in Centreville VA. Its a 4 week event. I went out there to support the bro' DJ CABEZON. There were 4 DJ's. DJ Twizm(eliminated), Dj Heat, Dj Eunique(eliminated). This battle was all about who plays hot records to move the crowd.
Everybody had their choice of weapons from CD-J's to the growing popular Sorato.

The first dj was DJ TWIZM from Baltimore. Being first is tough, but if you go first you gotta go hard or go home. His weapon of choice was the CD-J's and started his set with what sounded like a local artists rappin over a weak beat with bad recording. It did not sound official. Then it went into a blend of Baltimore club music and some kind of Trip Hop mix that you would hear if you were overdosed on extacy with prescripition pills. He played the same sample for over 4-5mins. I gotta admit he did a good job sampling songs creating a new sound (including sir mixalots bigg butt). But in this Dj Battle i dont think folks in VA like Bmore music which kept them away from the dance floor. I even saw this one girl who appeared to be annoyed and making funny faces, and I did not seem him switch CDS...lol.....

Next up was CABEZON..who had an advantage of local supporters. He started playing some good Hip Hop dance records like Lil Jons Pitbulls collabs "Shots" as well as some other current hits, he blended some Dancehall, and ended it with a blend of West Coast mx..Over 100 people were dancing at the bar and then joined the dance floor, everywhere I looked i saw girls dancing, and people were having a good time .HE KILLED IT plus he knew when to scratch on the records and his trademark electric baby voice "Dj Cab-e-zon".

Next was DJ EUNIQUE who had to keep the crowd amped but was not as successful even by playing some popular club tracks like Lil Boosies "Wipe Me down" and Lil Waynes "go dj". He played the wrong records at the wrong time. He even seemed to be favorited by the WPGC folks.

DJ HEAT did a great job by bringing the people back to the dance floor playin some great records like "Black & Yellow" he did a good job of blending the songs and keeping up with the crowd. He might give DJ CABEZON some competition on the next round as they both advance to the next round, but according to sources CABEZON is working on some tricks up his sleeve...hehehehehe

LA CONECTA presents HIPHOP por LA PAZ

Ill be hosting this event on April 1st (no joke) alongside Fantazma. This Conekta event is going to be different from the previous Conekta events. For one the lineup is crazy, mad mcs is on the bill. Also all the songs is to increase the peace, especially with all the violence that has been going down this year its time we make an event to promote awareness of whats really pasando en the barrio.

I hope you all like it I have decided that Im going to make this the official website, since its more cost effective, easy to design, and I can update it from my phone if i want to. Plus there is a lot of things that is happening that I need to release so. I try to post on this daily si diosito quiere. I will only post things that Im feeling at the time or things I feel ya need to check out, Im not going to be posting the cosas repetidas that many blogs share.

Latin Urban The New Hyphy?

It's no surprise that Latin music has become more popular both nationally and locally, as the population shifts in California and elsewhere move towards a larger Latin population.

More unexpected, though, is the emergence of the Bay Area as a hub of the Urban Latino sound, a fusion-oriented subgenre which is to hip-hop and reggae what Latin rock was to rock’n’roll in the ‘70s.

The name Urban Latino itself goes back to the eponymous NYC magazine which emerged in the mid-‘90s to cover the lifestyle and culture of a bilingual, bicultural 18-34 demographic of Latinos, Hispanics, and Chicanos living in urban cities. Along with census data confirming that states like California and Texas are indeed becoming more urban and more Latino, Urban Latino as a cultural movement has gained considerable momentum over the past decade. Flashpoints along the way have included the addition of a Latin Grammy awards show (which debuted in 2000), the more recent rise of commercial radio stations with reggaeton formats, and both the importing and exporting of Latin versions of hip-hop, house, and dancehall reggae.

There are few boundaries in Urban Latino, which draws on a diverse range of stylistic influences, from traditional Latin and Afro-Caribbean music to ocho (sacred Yourban music), to funk, electronica, rap, mariachi and surf rock.

Thanks in no small part to Los Rakas, the Oakland-based Panamanian duo who have ridden the reggaeton wave to national and international recognition, Urban Latino is especially prominent in the East Bay. Not since the short-lived hyphy movement has a genre made such a splash — and this one has much broader appeal.

Evidence of this could be found on a recent Saturday night at the New Parish, which is fast becoming the East Bay’s premier live venue for buzzworthy bands. Despite the rain, a near-capacity crowd turned out in droves to see Los Rakas and Chilean hip-hop sensation Ana Tijoux. The evening was supposed to be an Urban Latino summit, bringing together rising stars from two continents to share one stage.

Yet when Los Rakas’ flight from New York was delayed due to bad weather, the night turned into a breakthrough performance by Tijoux.

The evening began with a performance by Funky-C, a live Latin hip-hop/funk band featuring members of Bayonics, who warmed up a cold, wet February evening with a groove-infused set which featured inspired covers of songs by Tupac Shakur and the Orishas, as well as several original numbers. The crowd wasted no time in taking to the dance floor, as well as filling the upstairs balcony—even spilling out into the patio area, where clouds of mota wafted into the air.

If the audience was disappointed at Los Rakas’ absence, they didn’t show it, possibly because of the developing buzz surrounding Tijoux, whose performance the previous night at San Francisco’s Elbo Room had drawn rave reviews. Several audience members mentioned they had come to the New Parish specifically after hearing from friends who had caught Tijoux’s Friday night show.

A rising star, nominated for a Latin Grammy for last year’s debut album “1977”—a reference to the year of her birth—Tijoux represents an interesting cultural dichotomy. Born in Chile, raised in both her native land and France, and heavily influenced by the underground aesthetic of ‘90s American hip-hop, Tijoux goes against the grain of both current stateside rap and the dominant Urban Latino style, reggaeton.

Eschewing both the overly-commercialized, trend-following sound of today’s radio-friendly rappers, and the equally over-the-top bombast of their Latino reggaeton counterparts, Tijoux’s style favors a fluid lyrical flow over catchy, Auto-Tune-enhanced hooks. The beats on “1977” are somewhat sparse, employing sample loops—a ‘90s staple, which have all but disappeared in contemporary American rap. Despite its obvious retro leanings, what propelled “1977” into the forefront of the international hip-hop scene were Tijoux’s vocals, delivered in both Spanish and French, which spoke to both a Latin hip-hop variant of progressive feminism and an affinity for a traditional hip-hop sensibility – an old-school vibe coming from a fresh new face.

What became evident from Tijoux’s impressive Oakland performance was a third element, that of indigenous cultural influences, which has frequently informed hip-hop from Cuba, Brazil, and other places in the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora. This element isn’t quite so obvious on “1977”—which, Tijoux has explained, is a tribute to the era in which she, and Chile, embraced hip-hop—but it came across loud and clear during her New Parish set. Tijoux’s lyrics were certainly more meaningful for those in the audience for whom Spanish was their native tongue, but even non-Spanish speakers could find something entrancing in her melodic flow and the universal language of fist-pumping gestures.

Tijoux came on stage in a simple outfit: jeans and a t-shirt, which read “sudaca,” a once-perjorative term for Spanish-speaking Latinos which has been reclaimed as a word of empowerment. On her arm, however, she sported a multicolored wristlet made of woven beads—an obvious symbolic reference to native Chilean culture—which put her “look” in context. Unlike, say, Lady Sovereign, there was nothing gimmicky about her.

As Tijoux performed, there was a sense of witnessing something special. Even without a live backing band, assisted by just a DJ and a hype man, she came off as radiant, magnetic, and thoroughly entertaining—emphasizing emcee skills, the hip-hop art form, and an underlying sense of culture.

Her performance upended the conventional wisdom surrounding hip-hop, suggesting that international rap artists can be just as authentic as those born and bred in the United States—or even more so.

In Hip Hop there will always be disputes, who's the best rapper? what city makes the best music? whats the hottest album? who's the best story teller? who's better biggie, pac or pun? who's real and who's fake?

Everybody will have their own supporting answer, but the best consecutive Hip Hop concert has got to go to Guerrila Union's ROCK THE BELLS. In its 7th edition & this time in 4 selected citys including NYC, DMV, L.A., & San Francisco. You were able to hear some of the greatest MC's of all time perform their legendary albums from the golden era of Hip Hop.

The artist that performed where from an era when you really had to be moliendo. A time when their was no social networks, youtubes, gimmicks, dancing steps, or marketing schemes. Some of today's artist would have been eatin alive during the East vs West Coast beefs, the crack addicted streets, during the Bush-Clinton era.
It was an age about making the ALBUM.

Two stages, awesome weather, that funky smell that you can only smell at a concert, and over 15000 people wearing cool Tshirts and cargo shorts. The event united more whites, blacks, asians, and Latinos than the Glen Beck rally on MLKJR anniversary at the Lincoln Memorial this past Saturday.

Arriving at the event was a line longer than every night club on a weekend put together..But the line actually moved fast. As I arrive Slick Rick had already performed, after getting our drinks, We head towards the PAID DUES stage.

On the "PAID DUES" stage you were able to step into the underground realm of Hip hop...Hardcore lyrics. Some of the best performances were from Jedi Mind Tricks, Murs, Ill Bill with Dj Muggs, Brother Ali, an albino rapper, who had people moving to his punchlines and by the crowds reaction you can tell he made new fans. Immortal Technique, a peruvian rapper from Harlem, started his set with a crazy political accapella. He was problay the realest rapper there that was not afraid to walk amongst the crowd. Wiz Khalifa suprised the crowd when he introduced Wale on stage. Tom Morrello from Rage against the Machine performed with his new group called Streetsweaper Social Club.

On the main stage KRS ONE performed songs from CRIMINAL MINDED and educated the crowd as well. Supernatural who has the guiness book for freestyling the longest, freestyl'd on the spot about KRS-1 success.
A Tribe Called Quest had a crazy routine that had Qtip stripping to his boxers and introduced Busta Rhymes on stage for OH MY GOD and SCENARIO. DJ PREMIER was on the Tables representing for the DJS playing GANGSTARS classic and had a crazy dj set paying tribute to the late GURU.

Rakim still held it down performing his hits from the PAID IN FULL

Wu Tang Clan performed their classic album ENTER THE 36Th CHAMBER. Ol Dirty Basterds son who strikes a crazy resemblance to his father did a crazy job and was not shy to jumped into the crowd. Inspektah Deck who had receieved news that his mother passed away hours before his performance did a crazy job as well.

Ms. Lauryn Hill who a lot of people came to see, was first announced that she was not going to perform but then ended up late sounded & looked horrible, however she surprised everybody when Nas stepped on stage to help her out with IF I RULED THE WORLD.

SNOOP DOGG who I think had the best performance of all with a theatrical introduction to DOGGYSTYLE and a picnic table with 40'oz's. with the help from Lady of Rage, RBX, Warren G, Daz Kurupt. Snoop rocked the crowd even tough he had a teleprompt of his lyrics.

I would like to add by saying that reggaeton is the young stepsister. They both have the same father who is REGGAE. They just have different mothers. Reggaeton’s mother comes from Latino America, they say shes a freak, knows how to dance and is half Puerto Rican and half Panamanian. Hip Hops mother is a mix of Funk, Soul and Blues, so there fourth she must be African American.

When did Hip Hop officially become a music genre? Maybe it was when Billboards (musics god) tells the world that today I introduce to you Hip Hop as a music genre.
Its like this god grabbed the youngest son and spoiled it by giving him more fame, jewelry, clothes, cars, and everything materialistic that you could think of.

Well RAP is all grown up and has had many kids like Christian Rap, Southern Rap, West Coast Rap, East Coast Rap, Hardcore Rap, Pop-Rap, Street Rap, ect.

RADIO PLAY is like FOOD for music and music will do anything to eat, sometimes even sell its soul or do anything to alternate its appearance(remix) just to eat. With that being said POP MUSIC is like the rich popular kid. POP has no problem eating and gaining peoples attention. All though POP is rich and now and then will come out with a brilliant idea, most of the time POP will come out with some of the stupidest things and trick people into thinking its cool.

Since POP has money and a lot of power it has even tricked FM Radio Stations into playing POP-RAP and calling it HIP HOP. POP has even taken the street creditability out of STREET RAP. Meaning you no longer need to have street credentials to make STREET RAP, some of the most successful rappers are Ex-C.O.’s, nerds, and fake gangbangers.

So where does MOLIENDO MIX SHOW fit into this subject that has been talked about on numerous shows, ciphers, and magazines? First let me get this off my chest, I love music, I love being Latino, and I love being Hip Hop. But Deep inside I hate calling this music Latin Hip Hop or Hip Hop Latino. Latinos have been in Hip Hop since day one. I don’t believe in segrating music. Why do we segregate HIP HOP on some Black Hip Hop use this bathroom and Latino Hip Hop use this other bathroom. ITS ALL MUSIC!!!!! The same FM Stations that claim to be the Home of HIP HOP, should also play LATINO HIP HOP. Especially if you want Rappers with STREET CRED….lol
But MUSIC is a Business, and if you want people to hear your music you have to categorize it. SUCKS DON’T IT!!! Now tell someone in espanol. Esto es Rap en espanol, they automatically put reggaeton in the same conversation. Yes some reggeaton has raps in their songs, but so does merengue. Reggaeton is in its own genre of music just like salsa. Does it always have to be in the same conversation as Latin Hip Hop? THE MOLIENDO MIX SHOW embraces Latin Hip Hop and Underground Hip Hop. We bring these two subgenres of HIPHOP and mix them together to give you music that you wont hear anywhere else. We do not focus on reggaeton or pop-rap, although we might sneak a track here and there because yes we like to drink and party. As being a Colombian independent artist this day significa mucho.
This day I embark on a journey to NYC w the compadre @DJCABEZON to promote the MOLIENDO MIX SHOW.

We took this grind on the MEGABUS 95 route, after 4 hour ride that feels like 1hour with the help of a MACBOOK. We arrive in NY round 3p, hit the underground and jump on the Subway towards 51st & 8Ave. We meet up w Adam "El Judio Loco" to drop off our bags and freshen up.

8P hits & now its time to meet up wit SOFLA from the 305. We go to his telly "The Pennsylvanian" to politic for a while. We go downstairs and a stretch Limo is waiting for us courtesy of his Studio Owner...cant remember his name but I got the Buss'Card.

We arrive to the 1st night of the LatinMixx at TAJ Lounge in style. Chosen Few's Fuego gives me dap, we go inside and meet up wit KIM(Universal) and my Dominican Brotha DJ OH-INCREDIBLE (the 1st Dj I worked with on the "Sacrificio" album)

After some drinks and watchin the performances (Fuego, Malareignz,SitoRock, Christian Dior, and others). We bounce wit Oh & Kim to SUTRA lounge

SUTRA Lounge was the event of the night. it was Tony Touch & Dj Red Alert on the 1's & 2's, they played all breaks and not a single track after 1995. I was amazed, i felt like i was in a time machine. The crazy part was the crowd, young people in their early 20's, couple of old heads. Not a single southern track was played and it was a packed house on a TUESDAY NIGHT, it was soo packed we were on top of the sofas.....one of the reasons why I think the DMV is wack.

The sigiuente Dia we go the latin mix conference and meet w a lot of interesante industry people( shout out to JOKER BRAND) and the MODELS, omg my eyes were in pain.

Dj Cabezon got on the mix for the SOFLA show, so that def was a good look, plus SOFLA had the best show and presentation. We also ran into MIGO Productions, its always good running into some DMV fam.

Their was then a panel about tracking digital stuff, djs, actors, endorsements. I got up and asked a question that took them a long time to answer, next thing ya know, people were bum rushing us asking us questions....We def made a stand

We were kicked out, met up wit DJ FREDDY REY and went to CRUDO lounge to have free Hennesy, that got me feelin NICE!!...

We now what we need to do.....GET PROFRESHYAKNO!!!!

I know I been late on updating my 2010 WORLD CUP predictions, but my clone has been acting up.

The WORLD CUP "el juego bonito" is the best part of any summer. The only thing thing that sucks bout this W.C. are the controversial calls that the referees are making. I call it "MAFIA".
This W.C, not only makes me feel about being Latino but mainly being SOUTH AMERICAN.

My team was CHILE, since Im half Chileno. They played great and suprised a lot of people. ALEXIS SANCHEZ, "MAGO" Davidia did a great job. They ranked 2nd in their group and lost against BRAZIL in the finals.

I gotta give a shout out to USA, MEXICO, PORTUGAL, HOLLAND, GHANA, HONDURAS, JAPAN.

Now picking on a team para hacer barra, has been tough. As being Colombian i gotta be against ARGENTINA. But Im not a hater and I give props when props is due. They have an awesome team under LA MANO DE DIOS " DIEGO MARADONA.

After 40 years, the United States' war on drugs has cost $1 trillion and hundreds of thousands of lives, and for what? Drug use is rampant and violence even more brutal and widespread.

Even U.S. drug czar Gil Kerlikowske concedes the strategy hasn't worked.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill targeting a school district's ethnic studies program, hours after a report by United Nations human rights experts condemned the measure.

State schools chief Tom Horne, who has pushed the bill for years, said he believes the Tucson school district's Mexican-American studies program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people.

Public schools should not be encouraging students to resent a particular race, he said.

"It's just like the old South, and it's long past time that we prohibited it," Horne said.

Brewer's signature on the bill Tuesday comes less than a month after she signed the nation's toughest crackdown on illegal immigration — a move that ignited international backlash amid charges the measure would encourage racial profiling of Hispanics. The governor has said profiling will not be tolerated.

The measure signed Tuesday prohibits classes that advocate ethnic solidarity, that are designed primarily for students of a particular race or that promote resentment toward a certain ethnic group.

The Tucson Unified School District program offers specialized courses in African-American, Mexican-American and Native-American studies that focus on history and literature and include information about the influence of a particular ethnic group.

For example, in the Mexican-American Studies program, an American history course explores the role of Hispanics in the Vietnam War, and a literature course emphasizes Latino authors.

Horne, a Republican running for attorney general, said the program promotes "ethnic chauvinism" and racial resentment toward whites while segregating students by race. He's been trying to restrict it ever since he learned that Hispanic civil rights activist Dolores Huerta told students in 2006 that "Republicans hate Latinos."

District officials said the program doesn't promote resentment, and they believe it would comply with the new law.

The measure doesn't prohibit classes that teach about the history of a particular ethnic group, as long as the course is open to all students and doesn't promote ethnic solidarity or resentment.

About 1,500 students at six high schools are enrolled in the Tucson district's program. Elementary and middle school students also are exposed to the ethnic studies curriculum. The district is 56% Hispanic, with nearly 31,000 Latino students.

Sean Arce, director of the district's Mexican-American Studies program, said last month that students perform better in school if they see in the curriculum people who look like them.

"It's a highly engaging program that we have, and it's unfortunate that the state Legislature would go so far as to censor these classes," he said.

Six UN human rights experts released a statement earlier Tuesday saying all people have the right to learn about their own cultural and linguistic heritage, they said.

Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman didn't directly address the UN criticism, but said Brewer supports the bill's goal.

"The governor believes ... public school students should be taught to treat and value each other as individuals and not be taught to resent or hate other races or classes of people," Senseman said.

Arce could not immediately be reached after Brewer signed the bill late Tuesday.

For Hip-Hop, Brown Could Be the New Black... or the New Wetback

For anyone following the Houston Latino rap theme as of late and are wondering why Rocks Off might be telling more of a cultural story than a hip-hop one with our artist profiles, it's because amongst the traditional hip-hop following in America, Houston's Latino rappers may very well be looked upon as the industry's undocumented immigrants - if we're going to keep it real.

Some think they aren't supposed to be here, for one. They are changing the face of an industry that's historically been one color. The only people who are really supporting them are their own. They are, in some instances, unwanted if you read various blogs and discussion boards; and despite the thriving new consumer market they bring with them, a certain lack of major-label respect hangs in the air. Instead of "go back to your country" it might be "go back to looking like Ricky Martin and Shakira." That's safer and more digestible.

But depending on whether you're a fan of the Houston Latino rap underground or you think they are a bunch of untalented fools trapped in the purgatory of American assimilation, we're about to give you some real good news or some real bad news. Like undocumented immigrants, there's really no stopping them, or deporting these American citizens, who for the most part, don't speak a lick of Spanish.

Put up an industry wall, and they'll tunnel underneath it and find a way to make money.

And they are, for all intents and purposes, doing that. So that's why hip-hop is just a backdrop and culture is at the forefront of this Latino underground tale. Or, if you need a more concrete explanation, you could just look at the cover of Chingo Bling and Lucky Luciano's latest album. Prominently displayed are two words that go together as well as Jay-Z and Richard Simmons: "World Star Wetbacks."

Hey, African-Americans took back the "N" word and the LGBT community took back "queer," so why not? The name of the album was inspired when prestigious hip-hop website WorldStarHipHop.com featured the Texas Latin Mic Pass video, produced by Houston rapper Dat Boi T. It featured 16 underground Latino rappers freestyling on the streets of H-Town. That video was of course made when they felt slighted by Pepsi for not including them in their "official" Houston Mic Pass production.

Here's some of the love they got from the followers of WorldStar Hip-Hop.

Hey, now they're crossing the line and spreading falsehoods. We don't eat Goya beans. We eat Gebhardt refried beans. That's messed up.

The biggest wetback of them all, Chingo Bling, texted Rocks Off that the Chronicle was getting the exclusive interview on this album and so he wasn't able to talk to us about it or the dynamics of taking back ownership of "wetback." From one wetback to another, we hope that's true because we're big fans.

We hope our underground Latino content of late wouldn't be perceived by him as a dilution of his ever-expanding mainstream brand. But like some true wetbacks, Rocks Off had to get illegal, so we called Lucky Luciano, who is never short of words, in order to get the drop on them fools getting the exclusive.

World Star Wetbacks has all the comedic and chest-pounding lyrics only a Chingo-Lucky combination could bring. The beats aren't necessarily traditional or representative of their past work, and we say that in a good way. You can thank the portable piano thing Chingo's holding on the cover.

"Most of the beats Chingo made," Lucky told Rocks Off. "He barely got that little keyboard thing. We were at his house fucking around with it. I was rappin' over it, and we recorded them. It was supposed to be a mix tape, but it ended up being an album since the beats were all original. The beats are definitely different."

It opens up with "World Star Wetbacks" which sounds like a fusion of country and mariachi with Lucky throwing it down in Spanish but also intimidating a white guy singing the hook, "World Star Wetbacks." It's actually pretty funny.

"Blue Moon," which features Paul Wall, samples the original "Blue Moon" by the The Marcels. "Plastic Crack" feels like something Kanye West would compose and has a certain '80s feel to it, which is cool. "Hungover" is about just that, and if a fraternity catches wind of it, it could be a college house-party classic. It's not until nearly the end of the album with "Slow Motion" do they get back to H-Town roots, sampling Fat Pat.

In addition to Paul Wall, Coast, Stunta, Flatline, Roxxi Jane, Marques Elliot and Mookie Jones are all featured on the album. Not sure if they are World Star Wetbacks, as well. We didn't check their immigration status.

When It Comes to Latino Rap, Trae Is Part of La Familia

A couple of years ago, our brother was attending San Antonio Community College. One evening, he told us a story about a young cutie he was trying to spit game to at the end of his day.

"So I walk her to her car after class," he recounts. "And sitting there is the new Trae CD." "Are you serious?" I asked.

"Yeah, this pretty little chick has a hard-ass Trae CD sittin' in her ride," he exclaims, surprised that a petite mamita would be listening to something so hard. "They love them some Trae in San Antonio."

We thought that was pretty interesting.

Fast forward a year or so, and our boy, Juan Velazquez, at Univision Radio's 98.5 The Beat, invites us to a San Antonio club called Joe's Volcano for a Halloween bash. Joe's Volcano is equivalent to Houston's Roxy nightclub. It's been around since the battle of the Alamo and you can bet the house that three generations of women somewhere in the city, from grandmother to daughter to granddaughter, have popped, locked and dropped it on that club's dance floor.

So we think maybe we're a little old to be going to an 18 and up establishment, but Juan spits some names that caught our attention - Rob G, Big Gemini, Lucky Luciano, Lil Rob and Trae.

Sadly, the marketer in us always sees the world through boring terms like "demographics" and "supply and demand," so naturally we're thinking because San Antonio's such a Hispanic-dominated market (demographics), and throw in the fact that every other song playing on the radio at the time was Gemini's "Hypnotize," (demand) that the Dallas product, or maybe Rob G, would headline.

Looking at it now, we were pretty stupid to make that assumption, but it is what it is. Well, Trae was the last man standing on the stage that night and wrecked the hell out of the club. We consider ourselves big Trae fans but those damn Meskins in the 210 were singing along to tracks we didn't know the words to yet, and as our brother declared, "They love them some Trae in San Antonio."

Ever since then, we've wanted to talk to Trae out of sheer curiosity about what he thought of his large Hispanic fan base. Fast-forward another year and a couple of months, and we're part of the Rocks Off family and Jessica Vazquez of Street Science Entertainment calls us to pitch us a story. She tells us we should talk to Trae because a large percentage of his album sales can be attributed to his Hispanic fan base and it would be interesting to get his perspective on the Latino rap game. We found it odd because it was like she was inside our head, so we took it as a good omen and decided to follow the signs.

We reached Trae by phone Wednesday and to provide the conversation some context, we started off by telling him about that Halloween night and how his headlining performance was memorable.

"I remember that night," Trae tells Rocks Off. "I was actually not the headliner. Unk was." We played it off like it slipped our mind, but really, we don't have any recollection of Unk. Maybe Trae was the only thing worth remembering that night, or the goose had us feeling too loose. Ah hell, just blame it on the alcohol.

Anyway, the conversation that followed was revealing and endearing. It turns out Trae has lots of ties to the fathers of Latino rap in Houston, and that's important to us because it gave meaning to the random conversation we had with our brother almost two and a half years ago; to seeing Trae a year later in concert, and to the conversation we sort of manifested.

All of a sudden, it felt like talking to Trae wasn't coincidental but it had a higher purpose. We were supposed to tell the story he was about to tell us.

When you look at the album he did with Rob-G, Both Sides of the Fence, which brought together some of the best emerging black and brown rap in the city, we wonder why Trae, and not another H-Town artist, embarked on something so culturally motivating. Not to imply that other H-Town artists don't value their Hispanic listeners, but, "Why Trae?" was always a question that came to our minds. And then, he gave us the answer.

"When I first came into the game, I was signed to SPM," Trae tells Rocks Off of his relationship with Dope House Records in the late 90s. "When I first started, I was doing my thang with Carlos [Coy] many a nights, just grindin', trying to make people listen to our music."

Now it all makes sense. Trae's career roots stem deep into the record label that set the bar for Latino rap in Texas and he was signed to them, for the love of God. That's fascinating to us because when we think of Trae, we don't think SPM, or Dope House. But that's all going to change now.

"I got my hustle, learning how I do what I do from Rasheed," says Trae, referring one of Dope House's defining artists. "I was around before Juan Gotti was doing music real heavy. A lot of people don't know Juan can draw real good. He's good at art, sketching and painting. We go way back."

Both Sides of the Fence has a more defined meaning to us now, because Trae indeed walked on both sides of the fence.

"It was definitely done for a bigger picture and a bigger cause," says Trae about the album. "We've been separated in so many ways for so long. We realized we are the same people. People look at us and see we are different colors, we are from different sets, different hoods, but, all in all, we are branded as one. We are still the less fortunate and the have-nots."

And so Trae and Rob-G teamed up to set an example of how the two communities should be working together.

"We stepped out on the front line to touch everybody, to ignite a flame and bring a lot of people together," says Trae. "When people say united we stand, divided we fall, we intended to jump out that way."

And as far as the current landscape of Latino rappers?

"I just did some stuff with Low-G," says Trae. "There are lots of talented artists in the Latino world. I was surprised when Rob held his own [on 'Fences']. Not everybody is able to get on songs with me. He held his own. I was proud of him."

Wow. Trae sounds like a proud big brother or something, but after talking with him, that all makes sense now. He is family after all.

Can you tell us some of the things that you have been working on lately and some of the things that you have coming out in 2010?
I just dropped my new album "Firme y Paciente" on 01-01-10. I want to say that it's the first Latin Urban album for the year and the decade. So I got the whole year to push. I also have been crazy busy promoting and hosting "La Conekta" it's the only monthly event in NY & DC that networks and opens the doors for upcoming artists and unites emcees regardless of the language. It's real Hip Hop

How long have you been in the music industry?
Since 3am….jk…I've been in the music industry back when mixtapes were on cassettes, when cellphones were just cellphones and we would rock beepers, when myspace and facebook did not exist to network, and street promoters were really in the street. When your network was about who you really did know.

How did you get your start?
I started rapping in the streets of Colombia, did some radio internships, started a group, did shows on a monthly basis opening up for acts like Control Machete, Big Boy, Sany Y Papo, ect. I then moved to states started a group called Trafikantez, started touring, traveling, doing videos. The group disbanded then I went solo and Independent

How did you come up with the name Cero?
En Colombia, la gente me decia Carnicero. When I came to states I had to represent for all my parcero's. I left Trafikantez and I had to start from cero. So know I'm just Cero.

How do you describe your style of music?
Original, I don't sound like anybody. When I say original I really mean it. Like, you can listen to other cats and be like "they sound like this guy" or "you can tell his flow was inspired by so and so". My sound is straight Spanglish Hip Hop in the purest form. It's like stirring sancocho with a machete and spilling the boiling pot on the radio.

How would you say that it has evolved over the years?
My music has matured and has gotten more creative.

If you had to choose 3 artists to do featurings with who would you pick and why?
That's a tough choice. But I would have to say Juanes cause not only is he a heavy weight with the Grammys but I like the fact that he's a humble dude to el pueblo. My 2nd choice would be Bob Marley, I feel like I would learn a lot from him and the music would make you feel good. My 3rd choice would be Dr. Dre cause I did a freestyle over one of his lost beats and it everybody was feeling not just the beat but the lyrics as well.

If your life was a movie, what movie would it be and why?
It would be a mixtape type of movie like one of them Colombian Street movies meets "Catch me if you can" with a sprinkle of "Goodfellas", "Hustle & Flow" with "Pineapple Express" & "The Hangover". I consider myself young but I have really lived life to the fullest and have done some stupid shit.

What would your dream event be like, and why?
My dream event would be La Conekta with my parceros from Colombia and being sponsored by a big company.

The Day Report: 360 Deals Are Today’s “Record Deals”

I gotta state right upfront that I am biased against 360 Deals. I understand WHY they exist, I just find them unfairly oppressive in the label’s favor in an industry with a draconic history of jerking artists out of money. I stopped negotiating deals for artists in 2005 because I refuse to do a 360 Deal for any artist! How strongly do you have to hate something to stop your own income over it?

In the early 2000s, the music industry went through a severe change. Music sales plummeted, the importance of the internet reigned supreme, and there was an influx of artists into the industry causing an over saturation never seen before. It’s gotten worse, not better, for the major record labels.

Once used to a healthy profit margin that afforded grand lifestyles for those at the top of the food chain, the major labels became disgruntled as sales dropped while they missed the boat on less profitable digital sales. Taking on the role of dinosaurs fighting for survival, they tried everything from stopping the new digital revolution, to fighting it, to suing it, to band wagon jumping too late. Nothing worked for them. And they still haven’t learned from their mistakes—they still continue to fight the ways the consumers want to receive their music.

So to justify their continuing existence, they decided to take an even larger share of the pie from the ONLY aspect of the equation that they controlled—the artist (or the “content” provided for digital download). Back in the day, labels took roughly 87% of the pie while giving the artists 12% of the money AFTER the artist paid back everything spent on them from that 12% share. This means that if the artist sold $500,000 worth of CDs, and it cost $50,000 to market and promote that CD (a very low example), the artist share of $60,000 (12% of $500k) would be divided between paying the label back that $50,000 and a check for the remaining $10,000. The label would receive $490,000 for its investment and belief in that artist while the artist made $10,000. In exchange for giving up the lion’s share of the sales, the labels always told the artists that they’d make 100% of the touring. Any show money, was the artist’s to keep!

When the s**thit the fan financially for the labels, they decided to tap into the show money, and all other streams of income for the artists, as well. After all, if your profit margin is made smaller, you need to eat more of everyone’s income to keep the fat cats at the top, and the stock holders, happy. Most 360 Deals share in endorsement income (15% to 30% depending on the artist), performance income (10% to 30% depending on the artist), merchandising income (20% to 50%) and Film/TV money (15% to 40%). Before I go any further, I have to thank Bob Celestin (Law Offices of Robert A Celestin www.raclawfirm.com) for supplying me a 360 Deal contract for an indie label and the good folks at Warner Bros Records for leaking me a major label contract for an artist’s 360 Deal. This enabled me to write about REAL contracts instead of just what I’d heard from lawyers, artists, and label folks.

How do labels justify taking an even BIGGER share of the pie from artists? They complain that they are doing all of the developing, investing, marketing, and promoting. Their argument is that they believe in the artist when the artist has nothing, and they feel that assuming the lion’s share of the risk should result in sharing in a lion’s share of the profit. If the label is developing and building the artist to a level of super stardom, they feel they have the right to share in a percentage of everything that super stardom affords the artist. So if they drive the artist platinum, they feel they should get a piece of the tour that came from the fame the label helped the artist build, and a piece of the endorsement deal or film income that came from the fame that the label helped build. I guess I could see this argument better, if I actually agreed that the labels did their jobs well of building artists.

I have a different vantage point of record labels. I see major labels based in tall glass buildings in NY and L.A. that have little interaction with the streets, fans, or the artists. I see them sign artists that have already started to build a buzz or sell music themselves, and then I see them sit back and let the artists’ teams continue to do much of the work themselves. I don’t see major labels taking much risk with their artists, but do continue to put them through a system that is almost an outdated cookie cutter version of how to sell CDs. The labels rarely interact with the fans and are quite out of touch about what the fans want or are willing to buy. They seem to create this assembly line of artists who all sound similar and fit a certain format at radio. They seem to throw a lot of music into the marketplace and work whatever catches on quickly and easily. Most labels do what’s best and easiest for the label, not what’s in the best interest of the artist. Now, in a way, it’s very unfair of me to make this sweeping generalization, because there are some amazing people who work inside of major labels and really go all out for the artists. But I find these people to be the exception, not the norm, and I also find them to be frustrated most of the time because they constantly have to fight with their bosses and the status quo to succeed on a project.

I also find that competitor labels usually hire the best people away from the labels who are experiencing some success, thereby breaking up the synergy within a team once they all learn to work well together. This is why a label like Def Jam or Universal could be so strong in the late 90s and yet be struggling to succeed today. I find that artists rarely look at the teams working at labels and just fiend for a record deal no matter the success of the label or who’s at the label (staff or other artists).

So labels got further away from the fans, the staffs got lazier or more frustrated (perhaps more work for less pay?), the artists took less risk because there were more of them and they were just happy to have a record deal, and the fans started expecting music for free because they could just download it if they didn’t feel like paying for it. Major labels continued reducing spending, slashing budgets, cutting pay, and signing “sure things” (whatever that means). And to justify the spending they were still doing, they decided to offer deals that cut into more of the artists’ income. The argument was that out of 50 artists signed to their label, only one was successful and funding the 49 losses. No other business on earth has such a backwards business model. Imagine if Ford built cars and accepted the fact that every model but the Taurus was meant to be a loss leader, and that the Taurus sales had to make up the loss of every other brand under their umbrella. Huh?

Or imagine if banks lent money for mortgages expecting 99% of the mortgages to default, and 1% of the mortgages were expected to make up the bank’s profits that year. Further imagine if each homeowner paying back their mortgage didn’t actually get to keep ownership of the house after their mortgage was paid back! The bank’s argument would be that they took all the risk on the house, so they should get to retain ownership. The people that lived in the house would still have to pay for all the repairs and upkeep, but the bank would own the house. That’s how the music industry is built. And the folks at the top with the most to lose are the ones fighting to keep this backwards system alive.

People ask me all the time what I think is wrong with the music business. I would like to blame our troubles on the greed of major labels, the proliferation of bad music that the fans don’t seem to want, or the free downloading of (stolen) music. But the truth is that if the artists didn’t agree to these incredibly bad deals, there would not be incredibly bad deals. If a bank existed that kept ownership of your house after you paid back your mortgage, you would never do business with that bank. Yet all day, every day, there is a long line of artists willing to sign their lives away to record labels because they don’t understand, or possibly don’t know about, the consequences. Or maybe they just don’t care. Maybe the need for fame overpowers the need for money…until they realize they aren’t making money but someone else is. I find that it takes artists 3 to 5 years to realize they are getting jerked. In that time, a lot of money is lost and one or two things happens: either the artist is replaced with a new artist willing to make less money, or the artist has enough value to renegotiate their deal and share a larger piece of the pie. Sometimes, they even start their own labels and repeat this onerous process with their own new, unknowing artist! They got jerked, so they turn around and jerk someone else.

But back to 360 Deals. This new model will exist until artists are willing to say “no!” and I don’t see any signs of that happening. What I do see happening are artists becoming more entrepreneurial, and instead of signing to major labels, I see them finding their own investors and building their own teams who can help them succeed. There are enough laid off employees of record labels who’ve experienced some success out here to hire to run and work at indie labels. There’s a huge void in the marketplace to deliver the kinds of music fans want…and that’s not just one kind of music.

What I learned from both the buzzes of Drake (lyrical mainstream artist who’ll succeed at radio) and Gucci Mane (not-so-lyrical street artist with gutter stories and experiences to share) is that fans still want music. Major labels are still slow to respond to the needs of the streets and the internet is only speeding up and splintering demand further. There’s still a market for good music that the fans want. Our job is to give it to them. And if we do so with a fair and equitable split of the profits, the artists can build lifetime careers and we can all make money!

I hear the artists who sign 360 Deals say that they feel they have to sign these deals because the label won’t work their projects if they don’t give up a bigger split. I hear the artists say they want the labels to help them land endorsement deals, major tours, and TV Shows and film roles—but I’ve yet to see a major label do this. Let’s be realistic, these major opportunities go to the biggest stars and the ones who apply themselves directly in those alternate areas. If you hire a film agent, and take acting lessons, you may get increased roles in film and TV. If you increase your fame through music sales, your endorsement opportunities increase. Beyonce landed a Revlon contract because she was a star, Revlon did not make her a star. How many new artists are the major labels building to be stars? In 2009, it was Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle out of all of the releases that came and went. And neither of them were developed by the major label system—one was a product of an indie label and the other a product of a TV show. The majors had access because they did deals with middlemen and then applied their systems behind those movements that were already happening. Maybe that really is the job of a major label in today’s environment.

In my opinion, a 360 Deal is an excuse for a major label to take a bigger piece of the pie without doing any additional work. It’s insurance on their part. If the artist does blow up by chance, it gives them more opportunity to make a bigger cut. And that’s just smart business. I guess if they called it what it really is, I’d be less annoyed by it: the price of doing business with a major label. If they played a bigger role in building overall success, I’d be happy to see them share in a bigger piece of the pie at the end of the day.

Example of a “360 Deal” Artist (this is not an actual artist example):

Male rapper based in Atlanta with a strong following. He has his own team of inexperienced friends and family around him and a very strong street following. The DJs, fans, other artists and industry are supporting him and propelling him forward. With no real single or CD in the marketplace, demand is high—he’s getting $30,000 a show and performing three or four times a week for the past few months. This will last about 6 months, approximately. He’s put out a series of mixed CDs, for free, over the past year. The label signed him a year ago to a 360 Deal but hadn’t begun to promote him yet because their roster was full. The artist got tired of waiting and began putting out a new mixed CD every month to build his buzz.

Advance: $75,000

Album Budget once popularity increased: $350,000

Recoupable Marketing and Promotions: $750,000

Monthly Show Income: $420,000

Endorsement Deal: $50,000

Album comes out and sells a total of 350,000 copies (it was a very commercial album but the artist had been very street, almost gutter, up to the point of his album release so fans didn’t really embrace the album as expected).

Album income for label: $3.5 million

Artists’ Share after Recouping: negative balance of $405,000

$750,000 + $75,000 = $825,000

12% of $3.5 mill = $420,000

$825,000 - $420,000 = $405,000

Artist’s endorsement Deal Share: $37,500

If the label is taking all of the risk (they are not), putting up all of the money in all of the right places (they are not), devoting all of their attention to this one artist (they are not), and doing most of the work (they are not), then this business model makes sense for everyone involved. But if the artist is doing the bulk of the work, risking their career in the hands of the label, and coming out of their own pocket for many expenses, then this business model is hugely skewed in favor of the major label.

Beltsville Resident prepares for Showtime at Apollo

Chris Urquiaga, 18, of Beltsville has been playing piano since he was 7 and singing since his early teens. He's performed at numerous recitals and concerts but on Feb. 10, he'll take the stage at perhaps his most prestigious venue yet.

Urquiaga will sing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y., during the theater's weekly Amateur Night. At an Oct. 15 audition, he was among a handful of musicians, dancers and comedians selected from 300 entrants.

"I'm pretty excited for it," said Urquiaga, a 2009 graduate of High Point High School in Beltsville. He now majors in music composition at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. "Music is a passion that I've had ever since I was young."

Since 1934, the Apollo Theater has played host to music legends ranging from Duke Ellington to Jay-Z, as well as then-unknowns such as Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Lauryn Hill, who sang at Amateur Night long before earning worldwide acclaim.

Urquiaga is scheduled to compete Feb. 10 in the first round of a four-round amateur competition that will award $10,000 to a grand prize winner in October. Winners each night are determined by audience applause.

While he'd like to win the money, he said he is mainly honored to do what he loves at such a well-known venue.

"I get inspiration from music and I get concentration from music, as well," said Urquiaga, who will go by the stage name "John Christopher" during his Feb. 10 appearance. "I figured that my last name would be too hard to say."

Urquiaga has performed with High Point's choir and played piano for the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel Choir at Howard University in Washington, D.C. He has also written compositions for piano, cello, violin and flute.

"He is a tremendous musician — one of the most positive young students I've ever taught," said Ned Lewis, High Point's choir director since 1996.

The aspiring composer won't be going it alone when he takes the stage in Harlem, as he expects a busload of friends and former colleagues to make the trip to cheer him on.

Beltsville resident Deborah Carr, who is organizing the trip, met Urquiaga while serving as a director of Friends of the High Point Choir, a nonprofit that helps pay for the choir's trips to competitions in cities like Atlanta and New Orleans. She said she looks forward to supporting him.

"He's a wonderful, humble young man ... I would consider him a prodigy," Carr said. "I expect Chris to go all the way. He's in it to win it."

Today I was driving and the local station El Zol was playing Jay-Z's "We Run This Town"
the other day they were playing "Lady Gaga". Word on the street is that they are nervous with the radio competition (La Nueva) plus they competing against the internet. Now my question what I want to know is why cant they play Latin Hip Hop ?
Pitbull proved that Hip Hop rules over Reggaeton but he has not done much as far as opening the doors for other artists. I know their are other Cuban rappers(Salazar, Sofla Kings) from Miami that are tight.

Theres only one other person in the world that I know that shares this special day. They knows what its like to grow up having a cold bday on this December 4Th and have your bday presents be the same as ya xmas presents. Not that it really matters, but we dont know what its like to celebrate a bday at a theme park in the summer. Or what its like to get presents in the summer. we celebrate everyday like its our bday. I just copped some new Hip Hop albums. Yes i still buy CD's. I only buy CDs if its something that I support. In this case HipHop needs support it has been eatn by HipPop.

I recently got the new SlaughterHouse, Raekwon, & Meth&Red album. Belive it or not to this day i have never bought an original Lil Wayne or 50Cent CD (only bootlegs even thhough i got respect for them). I have never learned how to do the Superman or even seen the video. I dont listen to the radio (i only listen to the rock stations) I dont watch MTV or BET (i dont have cable i have the internet). But today what mainstream thinks is HipHop is really HipPop. MTV does their annual best mcs and did include Eminem ? WTF? La Conekta & Latinas Unidas

So this past weekend was pretty importante and progressive for the Latinos in Hip Hop from the DMV area. There were 2 shows (La Conekta & Latinas Unidas). I performed at La Conekta and was able to get a lot accomplished during this show. Im promoting a clothing line "44 Couture and "LeekoTV" which is doing my upcoming video of "Spanglish Ebonics". Also for the 1st time I rocked a new track "KestanHaciendo" on stage with Ol Skool Ru. For all those of ya that dont know me & Ru were like the only Latinos reppin on the mic back in like '98 in the U street area. So this was like a reunion on the mic.

THOUGHTS ON LA CONEKTA

The event was successful alot of people showed up even certain special individuals that i was real surprised to see. The only bad thing that happen was a fight broke out. But the show continued which was good.

I have performed at a lot of shows and at this one I come to fully understand why Wale lables this place as "Hate is the new Love". The problem with the DMV movimiento is the Hate that the propio artistas here dont recognize that they are hating.

Now Im not going to sit & lie to you that I love evrybody but I love to see upcoming artists do their thing on stage. I do however give my constructive criticism since no one else has the balls to let me know whats good.

Now their are a lot of hot songs they perform but if I didnt know who T.I., is or 3-6 mafia and you gave me your CD i wouldnt be able to tell the difference. The songs are great, the lyrics are hot but its just a Latin face behind it jockin their style of beats with the same "ayyy....ayyyy" ...all ya need now is a Braves hat

I come to a show and i want to hear sick rhymes, delivery, hooks. but if i come home remember people chanting the group name and not even your own fanbase know the lyrics to your hooks than thats not a good look. And i know dont speak for my self.

Some artists do have catchy hooks and delivery is crazy but lipsynchin....OMG

Now me i know i dont have them catchy club songs titled "Check my Swagger" or "I get Cash Money" but my songs do have a message and you will remember my punch lines and you will rewind the track like what did he say.

This show was awesome, i arrived a little late and didnt get to see all the performances due to parking, PLEASE MI GENTE WE NEED A NEW VENUE.

I think artists that come for a show and then leave is WACK. Like who are you to leave early, yeah i understand you gotta to work tomorrow at your boring day job but you came out to show love on the mic. So if you want love back stick around for the main show and network.

With the recent deaths of Michael Jackson, Ed Mcmahan, Farrah Fawcet, Billy Mays it has me a little depressed. Not that Im a weirdo or anything. But i have just been down.

I use to be a big fan of Michael Jackson when I was a kid (5-7yo). I use to watch the Jackson 5 cartoon show. I got Thriller (LP) for my birthday. I then got the tape so i could listen to it in my walkman. I love all the songs. I use to hide under the covers when MJ turned into a werewolf, then I ended up becoming fans of werewolfs
I had a friend that could entered MJ competitions. I didn't look the part at that time plus my dance moves werent as good as his. My friends couldn't afford the leather jacket with all the zippers. All i had was a glove, i think i even had the doll and the lunch box. My grandmother gave me a shirt too with MJ ironed on the shirt. The kids at school use to make fun of me cause i was a big MJ fan..I wonder what music they listen to today..That was the Thriller era, then came BAD. i really liked the song and to this day i still think he says the f word in it. I also liked moonwalker. One of my friends even had the video game on Sega. As sick as it may seem to some people, but when we think of Michael Jackson we remember our childhood or we go back in time. I also remember seeing videos of people all over the world screaming and fainting for him. He was a king and a legend. He changed the pop world and the music industry as well. He opened the doors for YO MTV RAPS back when MTV did not want to play his R&B material. To this day Im still not a fan of MTV

For some reason i feel like this is not true, he cant be dead. Not the moonwalker that transformed into a robot. Not the smooth criminal that became a zombie. Not the guy that told me to look at the man in the mirrow.

Now im the type of person that is skeptical about these things. But wasnt he planning a comeback tour. Now think outside the box and "What if" he is not dead, and thats hes doing this to change the music industry and the world that we live in.

Guía para entender a los sapos

¿Qué es realidad y qué es ficción en la telenovela que tiene cautivados a los colombianos? Por María Isabel Rueda con Gloria Congote.

Mientras los colombianos están familiarizados con casi todos los personajes del cartel de Medellín, muy pocos identifican a los del cartel del norte del Valle.

La nueva serie televisada del Canal Caracol inspirada en el libro del ex narcotraficante Andrés López, El cartel de los sapos, trae sorprendentes revelaciones sobre esos personajes de la mafia que no sólo fueron muy poderosos en su momento, sino protagonistas de las historias más sórdidas del narcotráfico.

A su lado, la historia de los hermanos Rodríguez Orejuela es casi marginal. El valor de la serie es que aunque no está basada por completo en el libro de López por considerar que no hay que avalar necesariamente su versión de los hechos, sí constituye una historia real disfrazada de telenovela. Aunque esos días de poder y gloria que por ahora se ven en la serie ya no existen, porque casi todos sus protagonistas terminaron asesinados, traicionados o extraditados, es un buen ejercicio para revivir la historia reciente del país.

Arcángel Henao, ‘El Mocho’, interpretado por el actor Alvaro Rodríguez, fue el ‘bobo’ del clan de los Henao que en la serie son los Cadena. Ya se ha visto en los primeros capítulos preocupado más por su linda mujer y sus traiciones.

Nadie como Lorena Henao para conocer las aventuras de la mafia que vivió al lado de su esposo Iván Urdinola y de sus hermanos. La actriz Sandra Reyes interpreta a una de las mujeres más interesantes de ese mundo sórdido.

Iván urdinola interpretado por el actor Fernando Arévalo vivió obsesionado con su esposa Lorena, sus hijos y sus hermanos.

Reconstruir el personaje de Orlando Henao era todo un reto. Al fin y al cabo se trata del máximo jefe del poderoso cartel del norte del Valle. El actor Fernando Solórzano interpreta su papel como el verdadero capo de capos.

Las siguientes son las reseñas de sus principales personajes. A diferencia de lo que cree Caracol, López defiende su trabajo y sostiene que los nombres jamás se debieron cambiar.

Según Andrés López, autor del libro, 'Pacho' Herrera fue, más que los hermanos Rodríguez Orejuela, el verdadero promotor de la guerra entre los carteles de Cali y de Medellín. Todo comenzó cuando un empleado de Pablo Escobar se le quejó porque uno de 'Pacho' Herrera le estaba robando su mujer. Escobar, en solidaridad, les pidió a los hermanos Rodríguez que le entregaran a Herrera. Ellos le informan al capo las intenciones del jefe del cartel de Medellín y, según el autor del libro, Herrera respondió: "Muy bien, señores, vamos a hacerle saber nuestra respuesta". Y la respuesta fue que el 13 de enero de 1988 a las 2 de la mañana, una bomba explotó en el edifico Mónaco en Medellín donde Escobar vivía con su familia. La explosión le causó serias lesiones auditivas a Manuela, la hija menor de Escobar. A partir de ahí quedó casada la guerra, y lo que vino en adelante fue duro. En Candelaria, Valle, Escobar supo que en una finca Herrera había organizado un partido de fútbol en el que iba a jugar. Los sicarios del cartel de Medellín llegaron disparando a diestra y siniestra contra los jugadores. Mataron a 13. Unos segundos antes, la fatiga había llevado a Herrera a descansar en las graderías. Esto, y la pronta protección de la Policía, que lo sacó encapuchado del lugar, le salvó la vida.

En represalia, Herrera envió a la cárcel de La Catedral un helicóptero equipado con una bomba para atentar contra Escobar. Por una casualidad atribuida al mal tiempo, el helicóptero, que alcanzó a sobrevolar la cárcel durante cerca de tres minutos, terminó estrellándose. Según Andrés López, 'Pacho' era "peleón, cojonudo, muy violento y se convirtió en uno de los hombres más ricos de la mafia". Su fortuna superó la de los Rodríguez Orejuela.

Muerto Escobar, se organizó una cumbre en la que los Rodríguez les pidieron a los demás narcos del Valle el desmonte del negocio porque, según ellos, la Fiscalía de la época les había ofrecido una negociación consistente en purgar sólo cinco años de pena, casa por cárcel y amnistía. Los que se negaron a aceptar esta oferta son los nuevos y poderosos narcotraficantes que conformaban el cartel del norte del Valle, liderado ya por su jefe máximo, Orlando Henao.

Mientras tanto, los Rodríguez fueron capturados. Y ante la presión de las autoridades y el resto de narcos que querían acabar con él, 'Pacho' Herrera decidió entregarse a la justicia mediante su abogado, Gustavo Salazar Pineda. Herrera, recluido en la cárcel de Palmira, Valle, continuó con el negocio y estructurando su ala sicarial. Ordenó atentar contra Wílber Varela, el jefe de sicarios de Orlando Henao. 'Jabón' salió herido, pero sus hombres detuvieron a dos de los sicarios quienes, luego de una intensa sesión de torturas, confesaron que el hombre que había ordenado atentar contra él era 'Pacho' Herrera.

Hoy: asesinado? Si hubo alguien a quien la mafia temía, era a Orlando Henao. Sagaz, violento, agresivo, vengativo, sus hombres lo adoraban y le profesaban un profundo respeto.

Fue el temiblemente conocido como el 'Hombre del overol', el único a quien los Rodríguez Orejuela temían más que a Pablo Escobar. Cuando la grabación de una charla de los Rodríguez con dicho apodo se filtró, Henao los visitó en la cárcel y les dijo que si no limpiaban su nombre, los mandaba matar. Entonces los Rodríguez, para complacerlo, resolvieron identificar como el 'Hombre del overol' a un narco de tercera categoría que se llama Orlando Sánchez Cristancho, uno de sus empleados, que después terminaría entregándose a la justicia norteamericana. Hoy vive en Kendall, Florida, y es propietario de una caballeriza.

Orlando era el principal del llamado clan de los Henao, compuesto, además, por Arcángel (alias el 'Mocho', en alusión a una malformación de su brazo izquierdo), Lorena y Fernando. Lorena era la esposa de Iván Urdinola, socio a su vez de su cuñado Orlando. Un día, Urdinola fue capturado por las autoridades, y los Rodríguez Orejuela se encargaron de informar al gobierno sobre sus actividades. Urdinola y Orlando les declararon la guerra y como muestra de su capacidad destructora, mandaron un grupo de sicarios para atentar contra gente de los Rodríguez Orejuela. Los hombres entraron disparando al restaurante Rodizzio Río de Enero, en Cali, en donde estaban reunidos el cuñado de Miguel Rodríguez, Óscar Echeverri, hermano de Marta Lucía Echeverri; Nicol Antonio Parra, escolta de William Rodríguez Abadía, hijo de Miguel. En el atentado murieron Echeverri, Parra y dos escoltas más y resultó gravemente herido William. Los Rodríguez le echaron la culpa al 'Hombre del overol', éste montó en cólera y le pidió a Urdinola que hicieran un acuerdo con los Rodríguez. La paz se rompió cuando 'Pacho' Herrera ordenó un atentado contra Varela en la carretera que comunica el aeropuerto de Palmira con Cali. El mismo atentado en el que Varela salió herido y logró sobrevivir.

Orlando Henao le dio vía libre a Varela para acabar con Herrera y fue asesinado en prisión mientras jugaba fútbol. Henao sintió una vez más que era el más poderoso. Preso en la cárcel La Modelo de Bogotá, se hizo cargo de José Manuel Herrera, hermano de 'Pacho', un inválido que se movilizaba en silla de ruedas y que era su compañero de prisión. Pero el inválido, que no era bruto, logró ingresar a la cárcel y camuflar en su silla de ruedas el arma con la que, a la semana siguiente, borracho, asesinó al máximo jefe del cartel del norte del Valle.

'Tocayo' estaba al servicio de los Rodríguez Orejuela. Manejaba, junto con su hermano medio Víctor Patiño, el narcotráfico en Buenaventura y despachaba los barcos con droga hacia México. Pero cuando se rompieron los carteles, 'Tocayo' se fue con los partidarios de no acabar con el negocio de la droga. Se volvió la mano derecha de Varela. Cuando capturaron a su hermano Víctor en el año 2000, para ayudarle, comenzó a colaborar con la DEA. Los del norte del Valle se dieron cuenta y entre 'Chupeta', 'Rasguño' y Varela decidieron eliminarlo.

En la serie: Fermín Urrego, alias el 'Tigre'

Hoy: detenido en una cárcel en Washington a la espera de su sentencia.

En el año 95, Orlando Henao tenía intenciones de entregarse con la promesa de una pena de cinco años. Les ordenó a otros miembros del cartel del norte que hicieran lo propio. Así lo hicieron Henry Loaiza, el 'Alacrán'; Nelson Urrego; Juan Carlos Ramírez Abadía, 'Chupeta'; Juan Carlos Ortiz, 'Cuchilla', y Víctor Patiño, quien había quedado libre en 2000. Para entregarse, Patiño contactó al entonces coronel de la Policía Danilo González, subalterno del general Rosso José Serrano. Ellos le pidieron que, como muestra de buena voluntad, entregara un cargamento de droga que le preparó para su envío a Estados Unidos el propio coronel González. Patiño lo envió y con esa misma prueba lo detuvieron en Colombia y lo extraditaron. Le contó a su hermano 'Tocayo' que ese 'hp' de González lo traicionó. 'Tocayo' dio información de los demás a la DEA para ayudar a su hermano. En La Picota, Patiño infiltró a Hugo Antonio Toro, alias 'Bochica', quien le confesó que tenía secuestrado al hermano del entonces presidente César Gaviria. Gracias a esa información se logró su liberación.

Hoy Patiño lleva siete años preso en una cárcel norteamericana. Aspira a que le rebajen la pena por lo menos a 15 años.

Después de ser uno de los más brillantes oficiales de la Policía, y condecorado por todas las agencias norteamericanas por su aporte a la persecución de Pablo Escobar, este oficial terminó siendo uno de los hombres más poderosos y temidos del cartel del norte del Valle. Fue asesinado años más tarde por Pedro Pineda, alias 'Pispi' y por Gildardo Rodríguez, el 'Señor de la camisa', al servicio de Diego Montoya.

Cuando se armó la disidencia contra el cartel de Cali, 'Chupeta' se fue a trabajar con Orlando Henao. Se entregó a la justicia en 1996, pero salió libre en 2000. Por cuenta de las acusaciones de narcotráfico del gobierno norteamericano terminó enfrentado con Varela, quien lo amenazó de muerte, por lo que se radicó en Brasil. Es quizás uno de los hombres más inteligentes que ha tenido la mafia en Colombia. Dueño de las millonarias caletas de dólares halladas en Cali. Es incalculable su extraordinaria fortuna.

Al igual que los hermanos Henao y Patiño Fómeque, Varela era un ex policía metido en el narcotráfico. Orlando Henao lo contrató como jefe de sicarios y después de su muerte terminó siendo su sucesor. Fue uno de los más criminales miembros del cartel del norte del Valle. Les declaró la guerra a todos y les ganó a todos. Libró la última batalla contra Diego Montoya. Fracasó en su intento de ingresar al Programa de protección de testigos de Estados Unidos, pues previamente Orlando Sánchez Cistancho les había contado a los gringos quién era realmente el tenebroso personaje. Como había viajado con inmunidad, le dieron 24 horas para que regresara a Colombia en donde acabó con el clan de los Herrera, se enfrentó con 'Rasguño' (hoy preso en Estados Unidos y en espera de una condena de aproximadamente 30 años) y lo obligó a desterrarse, mientras se dedicaba a hacerle la vida imposible a Diego Montoya. Varela se fue vivir a Venezuela en donde, según el autor del libro, se alió con un sector de la guardia venezolana conocido como el 'Cartel de los soles'. Terminó asesinado, traicionado por sus subalternos.

También se inició como policía. En el narcotráfico arrancó al servicio de Orlando Henao, y terminaron convertidos en dos de los más grandes jefes del cartel del norte del Valle. Se radicó en Bogotá e instaló su emporio en la Hacienda Santa Bárbara. Interesado en un acercamiento con la justicia norteamericana, envió a ese país a uno de sus empleados, Julio Correa, alias 'Julio Fierro', entonces esposo de la modelo Natalia París. 'Don Efra' se hizo famoso porque se casó con la ex reina de belleza Sandra Murcia vestido con una llamativa bufanda blanca que el entonces embajador Myles Frechette puso en ridículo como símbolo del narcotráfico. Orlando Henao se enteró de la maniobra con los gringos y ordenó matarlo. El asesinato se cometió en su oficina del centro comercial en Bogotá.

Fue más famoso por ser el esposo de Natalia París que por sus actividades en el narcotráfico al servicio de 'Don Efra'. Les propuso a los fugitivos de la Operación Milenio colaborar con la justicia norteamericana con la intermediación del fotógrafo Baruch Vega. Desde el 97 estaba colaborando con el FBI y les hacía inteligencia a Diego Montoya y a Iván Urdinola. Los celos por la modelo lo obligaron a regresar a Colombia, donde lo estaban esperando 'Don Diego', 'Gordolindo', Ramiro Vanoy y 'Don Berna', quienes lo secuestraron, lo torturaron, se lo entregaron a Montoya, y éste lo desapareció.

Socio y cuñado de Orlando Henao, casado con Lorena Henao. Su mujer, sus hijos y sus hermanos eran su gran obsesión. También era policía antes de dedicarse al narcotráfico. Murió envenenado en la cárcel de Itagüí en 2003.

Es como el hermano 'bobo' de Orlando Henao. Lo llaman el 'Mocho' por una malformación de su brazo izquierdo. Entró al narcotráfico empujado por su hermano mayor. Se la pasaba en fiestas, o paseando.Amenazado por Varela y Diego Montoya, se refugió en Panamá con su hermana Lorena. Allá se encontró con Nelson Urrego, que ya colaboraba con la DEA, quien los 'sapeó'. Hoy está preso, esperando una sentencia de entre 30 y 40 años. Lorena salió hace un mes de la cárcel del Buen Pastor de Bogotá.

Hoy: condenado a 22 años de cárcel en Nueva York.

El menor del clan Henao. Su ídolo era su hermano mayor Orlando. Se fue a vivir a Estados Unidos tratando de alejarse del tráfico de drogas, pero terminó otra vez metido. Se entregó a la DEA, pero simultáneamente seguía traficando. Cuando el FBI descubrió que era doble informante, lo capturó en 2001 y fue condenado a 22 años de cárcel. Saldrá en 2019.

De todos, fue el mejor amigo de Andrés López, el autor del libro. Nació en Buenaventura y se consagró como uno de los mejores transportistas de drogas. Diseñó las mejores rutas sobre el océano Pacífico y fue pionero del envío de droga a costas extranjeras en submarinos. Forjó grandes vínculos con las Farc, que lo proveían de droga y le daban protección. Se volvió super amigo del 'Mono Jojoy' en el año 92. Fue detenido en la cárcel de Vistahermosa de Cali, de donde salía y entraba a sus anchas dejando siempre un suplente. Por eso lo trasladaron a La Picota. Era la época de los diálogos en el Caguán, y su amigo 'Jojoy' le propuso sacarlo de la cárcel y protegerlo en la zona de distensión. Para ello planeó una de tres vías: o canjearlo por los tres norteamericanos, o, según el autor del libro, utilizar los buenos oficios de Piedad Córdoba, o escaparse por un túnel. Cuando ya lo tenía listo, le dio remordimiento dejar atrás a los hermanos Rodríguez Orejuela y les propuso que se volaran con él. Ellos dijeron que no, lo delataron a las autoridades la víspera de su fuga a cambio de ser trasladados a la cárcel de Palmira. Asprilla fue extraditado y condenado a 30 años de cárcel. Está en la misma cárcel de Brooklyn donde fueron recluidos 'Don Berna' y 'Rasguño'.

Jefe de laboratorios del cartel del norte del Valle, construyó su propio aeropuerto disfrazado de autódromo, en Zarzal, Valle. Cada noche enviaba entre 10 y 15 vuelos a las Bahamas. Para él, el narcotráfico era un simple negocio, pero no era partidario ni de la guerra ni de las confrontaciones sangrientas. Cuando mataron a Urdinola, Varela quiso quedarse con las propiedades de todos. Él le pidió no hacer eso "tan feo" y terminaron de enemigos. Varela sentenció a Montoya a muerte. La información para su captura la dio un informante desde Estados Unidos quien solicitó expresamente que el operativo no se hiciera con la Policía sino con el Ejército, algunos de cuyos miembros lo protegieron. Estuvo varios meses preso en un barco en alta mar.

Aunque ofreció su ayuda para desmovilizar el cartel del norte del Valle, y alcanzó a tener varias conversaciones con la Fiscalía, se convirtió en enemigo de Diego Montoya, quien le dio 24 horas para irse del país. Se refugió en Brasil, en Venezuela y en Cuba, donde lo capturaron. Lo expulsaron a Colombia y hace tres meses fue extraditado. Hoy está cooperando con las autoridades y es pieza fundamental de las acusaciones contra los paramilitares. Se calcula que lo podrían condenar a 30 años.

Mientras su esposo Iván Urdinola estuvo vivo, no permitió que nadie la tocara. Una vez muerto, se convirtió en la amante de Varela. La mafia sigue pensando que ella tuvo que ver con el envenenamiento de su esposo en la cárcel, pero eso nunca se le pudo comprobar. Estuvo condenada por enriquecimiento ilícito. Terminó con una enfermedad en la columna vertebral que la redujo a una silla de ruedas. Llegó a ser una de las mujeres más poderosas y ricas de la mafia. Es la única mujer del clan Henao.
